New Year, Real Me. What's Your Resolution?

Updated: Jan 9, 2024

A champagne bottle exploding fire works

I had a wonderful conversation the other day with a very dear friend about Viola Davis’s memoir Finding Me. During the conversation she asked me one of the questions from the book, “Who are you?” I had to process, and in true Janee’ fashion, ruminate over it for the next week! Ultimately, my friend’s question and Mrs. Viola’s memoir inspired me to draft this month’s blog.

So, the classic saying "New Year, New Me" is the vibe, right? And who doesn't like to set a good New Year's resolution? Every year we watch social media posts flood in with New Year, New Me sayings with corresponding memes of the woman with her old baggage behind her as she heads into the New Year. But let's get real – who IS this "Me" we're talking about? A lot of us have an identity that has been kidnapped and tied up by fear, anxiety, depression, shame, imposter syndrome… should I go on? Well, it's time to close the book on those old narratives and unveil the raw, unfiltered version of yourself in 2024. Come on, let’s look at how we're about to kick toxic vibes to the curb and discover the real, unapologetic you.

Out with the Toxic Narratives

We all got baggage, right? Old stories that tag along like unwanted sidekicks. I took some time to thumb through my old year books. Looking at the younger versions of me and then reading the accompanying notes my classmates left for me was… humbling. It was a reminder of where some of my own narratives started. This year, it's time to toss that script into the fiery pits of yesterday. Break free from the labels, the doubts, and the 'should haves.' Who you are isn't determined by what's happened; it's about what you choose to be now.

 Self-Discovery is a Rollercoaster, not a Checklist!

No one hands you a manual on self-discovery; it's more like a rollercoaster than a neatly organized checklist. It was so nice to hear from my dear friend that she is also on this same journey to self-discovery. Sometimes we forget that a lot of others are on similar paths. Let’s all embrace the twists, turns, and drops. Your quirks, passions, and those messy imperfections are what make you shine. It's about owning the ride and loving every messy, beautiful part of it.

Bye-Bye Toxicity, Hello Authenticity

It's time to say goodbye to anything that doesn't align with your true self. Those self-doubts, negative self-talk, and relationships that drag you down? They got to go! Ask yourself, why am I continuing to hold on to this? It isn’t accurate, it isn’t helpful, it’s in the way! Embrace the authenticity within – the good, the bad, the chaotic. To any recovering perfectionist out there… this part is hard, not even gone lie. Trust the process though.

Setting Boundaries Like a Boss

Boundaries aren't about being distant; they're about respecting yourself enough to say, "This is where I draw the line." Learn to say no when you need to. Every ‘yes’ that should have been a ‘no’ just pushes you further away from YOU. Say yes when it feels right. This year, it's about creating a space where your true self can thrive, unapologetically.

So, here's to 2024 – the year of unmasking, letting go, and rediscovering what makes you, well, you! Let's unveil the real, unapologetic you in 2024 with a 'New Year, Real Me' resolution. Say goodbye to toxic narratives and hello to authenticity! Buckle up, it's going to be one hell of a ride. #NewYearRealMe #HappyNewYear #LightBulbLPC #MentalHealthMatters
